Worth Knowing
A 2391 qualification is currently required in order to gain your JIB grading as an approved electrician.

There are individual Level 3 awards: (2391-50) Initial Verification and (2391-51) Periodic Inspection qualifications available but you can save time and money with our combined 2391-52 course.

The course has been introduced to streamline and simplify the qualifications required to carry out advanced inspection and testing.

As a holder of this qualification, you will demonstrate to your customers that you are a competent installer or tester, and are up to date with national requirements for the industry, which gives you the right to sign off the electrical certificates required by the BS 7671 and also by the Part P of the Building Regulations.

Inspection and testing has always have been the hardest qualification to obtain so it is not surprising that the requirements are strict and must be met by anyone who wishes to undergo the examination process. It is not mandatory but it is usually required by the course provider that delegates should already hold the current C&G 2382-18 – BS 7671 IET Wiring Regulations 18th Edition qualification.

Candidates are expected to have a working knowledge and understanding of electrical principles and wiring systems. They must also be conversant with current electrical installation practice. Generally speaking the inspection and testing qualifications are for electricians who have completed an apprenticeship, hold a current
C&G 2382-18 – BS 7671 IET Wiring Regulations 18th Edition qualification, and have been working for a number of years gaining the experience needed to complete either of the 2391 Inspection and Testing qualifications.

Course Content
The course and qualification is based on the current “IET Guidance Note 3 – Inspecting & Testing” (GN3)
to verify compliance with the current “Requirements for Electrical Installations –
IET Wiring Regulations 18th Edition – BS 7671”

The content follows C & G 2391-52 syllabus and mainly covers the requirements for:

  • Health and Safety and associated legislation, codes of practice and regulations.
  • Safe isolation of electrical circuits and installations
  • Requirements of initial verification and periodic inspection and testing
  • The safe testing and commissioning of electrical installations including the use of test equipment.
  • Inspection requirements of initial verification and periodic inspection including classification codes.
  • Initial verification testing methods.
  • Periodic testing requirements and associated fault diagnosis.
  • Interpretation and verification of test results
  • Completion of electrical installation certificates and electrical installation condition reports, inspection schedules and schedule of test results.

The Course would also include:

  • Principles and use of overcurrent protective devices and RCD’s
  • Protection methods provided by supply systems.
  • Earthing systems, protective conductors, types and use.
  • Fault, short circuit and overload protection principles.
  • Cable types and factors that affect test results, and typical cable faults.
  • Cable selection principles.
  • International protection index and application.
  • ADS and Earth Fault Loop Impedance requirements and verification methods.
  • Various practical exercises to practice and confirm electrical inspection and testing principles.
