Who is EV Charging training for?

This course is intended for experienced electricians and installers who want to enhance their skillset to allow them to install domestic, commercial, and on-street EV charging points.

Why take this course?

There is an increasing demand for EV Charging points, but too few installers to roll them out. This is already a booming market and it’s set to get much bigger in the near future. You will be getting in early on a sector that should prove to be highly lucrative in coming years.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification. However, the minimum mandatory age is 18, and it is recommended that:

  • You are up to date with your BS 7671: 2018 18th Edition Wiring Regulations, C&G 2391-52.
  • You have at least 2 years’ industry experience.

In addition, we expect you to demonstrate that you are able to:

  • Correctly install and terminate pvc/pvc cable (twin and earth).
  • Correctly install steel wire armoured cable (swa).
  • Carry out an initial verification (inspection and testing) on an electrical installation, and complete the necessary paperwork.

Note: These competencies are required for the assessment, and are not taught as part of the course.

Course Content

You will be taught how to design, specify, install, fault find, test, and inspect EV Charging points for the commercial and domestic sectors.

  • Introduction to electric vehicles: Electric vehicle types, characteristics, charging requirements, safety considerations.
  • Overview of EV Charging: Modes of charging and requirements, restrictions.
  • Electrical installation requirements: Supply, earthing, planning permission, explosive atmospheres, protection, labelling, control, risk assessment.
  • Installation: Practical, domestic and commercial installation.
  • Inspection, test and certification: Commissioning and DNO paperwork.
  • System test, fault-finding and examination: Includes both a practical and written assessments.

Assessments

Open book multiple choice (40 questions) online exam.
(Candidates require a copy of “4th Edition Code of Practice for Electrical Vehicle Charging Points”. These can be purchased from us for £55.00, no VAT.)

One practical assignment which includes:

  • Installing an EV car charging circuit.
  • Initial verification of an electrical Installation.
  • Completion of EV charging relevant documentation.
Certificates

Upon successful examination, we will issue you with a City & Guilds 2919-01 Level 3 Certificate.
